Tips From The Top: Storytelling Coach, Doug Lipman
October 19, 2009
Let me introduce my friend and storytelling mentor, Doug Lipman. I love Doug. He is one of the kindest and most generous people that I know. The first time I met him, I flew all the way to California to do a workshop with him.
I arrived late, frantic from the L.A traffic. I walked into the room and he stood up and with his arms outstretched said, “Look who you turned out to be,” as if I were the most special person in the world. That is how Doug treats everyone and is what makes him stand out as a storytelling coach. He has helped more storytellers develop their gifts than anyone I know. Doug will be featured on my Radio Show this week and I wanted to share a bit of his story with you.
Doug told his first story to a room filled with emotionally disturbed adolescent boys. They began with their arms folded and sneers on their faces. A few seconds into the story, they fell into a listening trance. That moment changed Doug’s life. In a way, he has been pursuing that form of connection through storytelling, ever since.
Over the last 35 years, he has, among other things:
- Performed for all ages, on three continents
- Authored 4 books
- Created innovative forms of mulit-media storytelling instruction, like the Storytelling Workshop in a Box and the Image Riding Toolkit
- Published 100 issues of his email newsletter, “eTips from the Storytelling Coach”
- Taught storytelling to scores of organizations, such as:
The Jet Propulsion Lab (NASA)
The World Bank
The Center for Creative Leadership
MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) - Coached many professional storytellers – to improve their storytelling and their marketing
At the end of that workshop as we did a closing circle, Doug grabbed my shoulders and said, “If you try to get out of my life, I’ll kill you.” I laughed the entire way home. He knew that I needed exactly that fierce kind of brotherly love. And we’ve been bonded ever since.
I am delighted that Doug will be with us on the show, sharing his wisdom and expertise from many years as a leader in the Storytelling field. I hope you’ll join us.
